Carrie Tipton, Owner & Sole Proprietor
The Arbor Law Firm is a solo practice operated by Carrie A. Tipton, an attorney practicing in Northern Virginia since 1997. Ms. Tipton is a 1994 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, where she served as the Executive Editor of The Virginia Environmental Law Journal and as volunteer coordinator for Action for Better Living. After a brief stint in a large D.C. law firm, Ms. Tipton served in the Peace Corps in the Republic of Congo, then returned to Virginia in 1997 to act as a public defender for juvenile defendants in Loudoun County.
Ms. Tipton switched to private practice in 2002 with a traditional law firm in Fairfax, focusing her efforts on estate planning and development of wills and trusts for families, as well as providing legal services for Virginia adoptions. As a full-time working parent, she recognized the need in these particular practice areas for flexible appointment times, in a more child-friendly environment than a law office could provide — she established the Arbor Law Firm in March of 2008 to address those needs, and began offering flexible, in-home services for clients. Arbor’s services have evolved over the course of the COVID pandemic, and all pre-final appointments are now offered to clients via Zoom video or phone conferencing, while final meetings are held at clients’ homes or offices respecting current safety recommendations.
In addition to her estate planning and adoption practice, Ms. Tipton has served as a qualified Guardian ad Litem for children throughout Virginia. She has been appointed by local courts in over 100 cases to represent the best interests of juveniles involved in the civil and criminal court systems, including children in foster care, and children placed for adoption or subject to highly litigated divorces.
In her spare time, Ms. Tipton enjoys running, kayaking, hiking, inventing complex back stories for her adopted pets, and visiting her daughter at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She eventually intends to learn to ski at Whistler, but most likely will stay by an outdoor fire pit with a book. She is a rabid supporter of local public radio, and volunteers with local social services supporting underserved communities and children.
